What If “Everybody” Is Wrong?…

I wished for time to just “be.” Ask and ye shall receive. I got tossed in the corporate moat by mutual agreement, me sitting back and waiting for it mostly. It was a long time coming. But will it make a great book? You know it.

Yes, it’s all about corporate greed and deceit. And the mean girls. And a boss like Miranda Priestly. Our heroine, however, is neither young nor naive. It’s delicious.

I have been gifted with time. So what have I done with this precious gift? Have I grown as a woman? Have I made some sort of difference in my community? Nah. I write, but I also spend a good portion of each day in sweatpants watching Netflix with Skittish Tabby.

I’m getting kind of bored. Whaaaa? Everything I wished for materialized, and I’m bored? Is it even possible that I do like interacting with people, networking, and strategizing? Is it in the realm of possibility that I’m not meant to live the hermit life? Did you know you can come to the end of Netflix offerings? And, sigh, after a while, the Real Housewives really are ridiculous.

It’s not like I’m not busy. Two books are on the way. A company is in the planning stages. I know, right? Point is, I longed for freedom. I wished for my job to not own my time, my weekends, and my fears. It’s on me that I let it take over. I prayed for time to just be. I got it. Turns out, I can handle “just be” for about a month.

Is it possible that our wishes are messages? Is your body, mind, or intuition trying to tell you something? It may not be you. Your job could be toxic. Your boss might be a bitch. Perhaps you just need a break. Don’t break your mind or spirit to find that out.

WebMD defines burnout as “a form of exhaustion caused by constantly feeling swamped. It happens when we experience too much emotional, physical, and mental fatigue for too long. In many cases, burnout is related to one’s job. But burnout can also happen in other areas of your life and affect your health.” Well, well, well. Ladies, sound familiar?

We can only run on the hamster wheel for so long. Eventually, our bodies and brains say, “No thank you.”

What are you doing to protect yourself, both in and out of the workplace? What measures are you taking to ensure your wellness? Are you even paying attention? Can you step off the wheel long enough to think about it?

For just a half hour, be gentle with yourself. Reflect on what you do well. Drown out the comments of others. Write it down. Are you living the life you want? If not, why not? There are endless jobs, opportunities, and partnerships out there to support your dreams.

Goddess of Corporate, Miranda Priestly tells us, “Don’t be ridiculous. Everybody wants this. Everybody wants to be us.”

Isn’t it possible she’s wrong?
